Don Jones - Designer of M&H Tires
"Big Daddy" Don Garlits set multiple speed records in drag racing with the help of Don Jones from Denman Tire and Marvin Rifchin of M&H Tires, whose collaboration on M&H Racemaster tires gave racers like Garlits the traction needed to reach historic speeds.
-
170 mph – In 1957, Garlits became one of the first drag racers to hit 170 mph, using the traction-enhancing M&H Racemaster tires that Jones helped design, enabling racers to harness the growing power of high-performance engines.
-
180 mph – By 1958, thanks to further innovations in tire design from Jones and M&H, Garlits reached the 180 mph milestone, demonstrating the tires' capability to safely push the limits of speed.
-
190 mph – In 1961, Garlits surpassed 190 mph, aided by the now-famous M&H tires, which had become trusted for handling extreme speeds and intense forces on the drag strip.
-
200 mph – On March 8, 1964, Garlits broke the historic 200 mph barrier at Pomona, California, with a run of 201.34 mph. This achievement highlighted the revolutionary work of Jones and Rifchin, whose M&H Racemaster tires gave Garlits the competitive edge to achieve record-breaking speeds.
These records underscored the impact of Don Jones and Marvin Rifchin on drag racing history, as their innovations in tire technology propelled the sport into a new era.
